Thank You
________
Dr. John L. Bryan served as Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering beginning with the establishment of the Department in 1956 until his retirement from the University of Maryland in 1993. https://fpe.umd.edu/JLBChair
My father, John L. Bryan, was apparently good at his job and respected in it - for whatever that matters. In 1997 he set up the Sarah B. Bryan Memorial Scholarship after his wife, my mother Sarah Bryan died from lung cancer after a quarter century of smoking. I knew about the scholarship at the time, though no one asked me about it or bothered to show me the materials they had prepared ludicrously describing Sarah as some sort of enlightened humanitarian and a "friend, supporter and role model" for her children. This is bullshit and always has been. Sarah was a bigot and child abuser and an example for no one. I no longer intend to let UMD or anyone else regurgitate self-serving lies about Sarah, her character and her actions, and use me as an example of her supposed character and qualities.
So, for the record...
Sarah was a bigot and a child abuser - not to mention ludicrously incompetent - and John could not be bothered to do anything about it. He should not have had children and was negligent and irresponsible in refusing to pay any attention to Sarah's abuse and bigotries and Joan's various Sarah mimicry. He did not want to be bothered or take responsibility for what went on in that household. When he was at home he generally sat on his ass shoving peanuts down his face, not giving a shit about much of anything while Sarah stomped around doing her "I'm a Loudmouth White Woman" (her phrase) bigot and abuser shtick. If one is honest, he was hardly free of several of those bigotries himself.
In any event, neither John nor Sarah was physically, mentally or emotionally equipped to have children but proceeded anyway for their various reasons. At the very least, it is long past time UMD stopped promoting this nonsense, whitewashing Sarah and pretending she was some sort of examplar of virtue and family rectitude.
